If you purchased this piece from the Wave Gallery in Key West, Florida, please know I got stiffed on my portion of the selling price. My hope is that you got a really great close-out deal before the gallery closed its doors permanently and that you love the piece. I, however, got nothing. The Wave Gallery burned down shortly after closing. I like to think of it as karma.

‘67 Ford Fairlane

‘67 Ford Fairlane was commissioned by Troy Williams. Troy is a colleague of mine. For years, I would admire The Blue Beauty when he’d drive it to the office on lovely weather days. In the mid-00s, he decided to sell her and asked me first if I wanted to buy her. Of course I wanted to. The amount of money he was asking was slightly out of my budget. We traded. I paid as close to what he asked as I could with a collage thrown in to sweeten the deal. So ‘67 Ford Fairlane is still Troy’s. The car is now my mine.

Lucky in Love

Lucky in Love was commissioned by a colleague as a gift for his wife who’s birthday is on St. Patrick’s Day. He had a knack for finding four leaf clovers, which he collected and pressed in a book. He provided me the book of clovers, which are used in the collage. Some of the clovers are magazine imagery. Some of the clovers are left natural. Others are painted green with glitter added to the wet paint. Other imagery include items that go hand in hand like peanut and jelly, nuts and bolts, and chocolate and peanut butter. Additionally the collage features kisses — the candy kind and two sock monkeys smooching.

Maria Morris collage commission 1940 Cadillac Limo

‘40 Cadillac Limo

‘40 Cadillac Limo was commissioned as a gift for Gene Kappel. Gene owned a gorgeous Cadillac limousine in a dark hunter green. The other themes are fruits, puffins, guitars, and an over the top sandwich. Additionally the collage is peppered with red gift bows. After Gene’s passing, the collage went to his son and is now part of the permanent collection of Mark and Jennifer Kappel.

Want your classic beauty immortalized as art? Here's how it works.

Your ride is the starting point. You provide me with the image of your car, truck, bike, or mechanized vehicle. Digital or print photos both work. Its important that the image is clear and little else is obstructing the view of the vehicle. My preference is that there are no people in the photo. Please note that the images will be cut, so only provide media you don't need returned.

The photo you provide determines the overall size of the collage. If you want a little piece, provide a little photo. If you want a big honkin' sucker, provide a larger image. Its OK to specify that you'd like a larger collage with a small car image. (See '51 Frazer as a reference.) On average, the image of the car will dictate the size of the piece.

In addition to your vehicle, I use images that are funny and kitsch (like juke boxes, 50's TVs, Johnny Cash's guitar, the Eiffel Tower, piggy banks, etc.) because why take things so seriously? They're supposed to be fun and weird. I have a tendency to slip suggestive imagery into the collages. If you're very straight-laced, let me know so that you are not offended by the finished piece.

With the exception of the image of your vehicle, I only work with commercially printed images from magazines, newspapers, junk mail, etc. Finding images on the web has no element of surprise or randomness. Part of the fun in these collages is finding the pieces and parts and not having any control over what I find. However, you may have a passion for something which you'd like featured in the collage. For example, you may love golf and would like a golf element worked in with your fabulous ride. In these instances I may need to break my rules and find coordinating elements on the web. However, I will try my best not to do this.

For more details on the commission process, please contact me. The base price for the commission process is $150. Pricing will increase depending on detail, size, turn-around time, etc. I can provide a more accurate quote once we have a conversation and some details are discussed.

Your beauty should be art, shouldn't it?

The Brooklyn Art Library was home to over 41,000 sketchbooks from over 130 different countries. Participants of the project ordered blank sketchbooks, chose a theme, filled them up, and connected their books online with search terms, an artist bio, and other unique content. Every single sketchbook that was sent back to the library was cataloged and placed on the shelves for visitors to view. That meant, as a visitor of the Brooklyn Art Library, you could search for just about anything you can think of, from the thousands of search terms participants have logged. The librarians would then pull the book down for you and allow you to hold and flip through it.

Was. Could. Past tense. Tragedy struck. The moving truck that was transporting the entire Sketchbook Project collection from Brooklyn to St. Pete caught fire while in transport.

Sadly, my sketchbook was not one of the 70% that were rescued from the fire.

I created a color story of collages within my sketchbook. In order to keep within the size limits (thickness) determined in the rules of entry, I removed three spreads from the notebook. Adding layers of paper and glue to each spread created some serious bulk. I called my book Running with Scissors. In keeping with my collage style, the imagery was a quirky mix of silly and humorous graphics full of suggestion and innuendo. While I typically inject classic cars into my collages, a handful of these do not feature a car. I’ll let you explore that detail.
