Let them hear Cake
Warning. This article is taking the long way home.
I’m listening to a book. When this article posts, I’ll have finished it. It expires on the 22nd, so time is ticking like a sold soul’s watch expiring at midnight. By all accounts, this is a beloved book—this bestseller. Several agents I’ve researched or queried include it on their manuscript wish lists, and like so many books these days, it has been optioned for film or television adaptation. Author goals.
‘78 Toyota Cressida
Let’s get under the hood of the ‘78 Toyota Cressida, breaking down the inspiration, themes, and the methods to the madness. The car falls somewhere in the middle of being a focal point and an accent piece; however, the burgundy body played a pivotal role in the color story. Political undercurrents ripple throughout with governmental and monarchical imagery paired with money and symbols of the US military. Is ICE cream just ice cream? Is a vice a metaphor? Questions to ponder.
The Sweet Spot
The house rules state: no shoes in the bed, no telling another family member they aren’t allowed to sing, and no shaming another family member for their musical choices. Volume changes can be requested.
Once upon a time, I was in a relationship with a music snob. You know, the kind of person who likes a specific genre or sometimes genres of music, and all else is shit. They were quick to let me know, through overt and covert ways, that liking what they considered shit was wrong. I closeted or even abandoned music I liked. And the shame received for loving music that brought me joy is now why I have a house rule. If my kid wants to floss to video game music, great. Get it, boy.
Why Romance?
It’s Taco Tuesday, and Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift announced their engagement. Yeah. Yeah. I know. I’m one of those folks. Admittedly, I’m not a Swiftie superfan. Or even a fair-weather one. I’m somewhere in the middle, liking most of what I hear. Taylor’s talented and writes a damn fine pop tune. I dare anyone not to sing along to “You Need to Calm Down”. And if you do sing, I’ll never tell you you’re being too loud.
And Travis? He’s a hunky footballer with a wicked smile and enough balls to wear a goofy bucket hat. Nuff said.
‘56 Corvette (The Pea Shooter)
Over the years, I’ve written about my artistic process, where I find my images, and the sexual references within most of my collages, but this is the first time I’ve written about a specific piece. Honestly, I’m not sure where to start. Maybe the focal points? I haven’t always included classic cars. ’58 Cadillac was the first. But then I found a gorgeous image of an Edsel, and a theme was born. It’s been suggested that I should abandon the cars because they’re very niche, but I love them, and they create a wonderful naming convention.
Pandemic’s Box: 1
Music from a bygone era
While bored during the height of the pandemic and browsing Facebook Marketplace, I bought two boxes of 45s from two families offloading their Grandpa’s memories. The exchanges were like shady drug deals, taking place in the Kroger parking lot. Trunks open. Masks on. Eyes darting. Liberal dousings of hand sanitizer when back in the car.
I ditched the musty cardboard boxes and transferred the 45s into pretty woven ones, but left the records to sit—until now. Phoebe (15), Von (12), and I are sharing thoughts on our three random picks. Listen along.
Song selections: “The Night Watch”, “Friendly Persuasion”, and “Breakin’ in the Blues”
